Tata Nexon scores 4-star in NCAP crash test

Tata Nexon – subcompact crossover from Tata Motors

Indian automobiles are notoriously unsafe. However, there is something to cheer about. In latest car news, the Tata Nexon, which is a subcompact crossover that went on sale in India in late 2017 has scored remarkably well in Global NCAP crash tests. The front wheel drive vehicle which has five doors is the first small crossover from the legendary house of Tatas. It is based on a revised version of the Tata X1 platform which dates back all the way to the Indica in 1998. It is a low priced offering starting at about six lakhs and undercutting all rivals such as Ford Ecosport, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, and Renault Captur.

Tata Nexon

Features and specifications

The interior is well finished and spacious with a huge 350-liter boot. The engine variants are 1.5-liter diesel or 1.2-liter petrol. It comes with plenty of awesome car technologies including LED daytime running lights, rear cameras and an 8 speaker infotainment system. Dual airbags and ABS are standard. The car boasts of 209 mm ground clearance making it able to navigate the potholed roads of Indian cities with ease.

Tata Nexon

In car comparison, Tata Nexon differentiates itself from competitors with its funky and cool design. Instead if the Vitara Brezza’s solid boxy look, the Nexon is all about sweeping curves. Tata has a well-established dealer network and service centers which provide sufficient knowledge of how to maintain/service a car.

Scored 4 stars in NCAP crash tests

In Global NCAP crash tests, the Nexon has received a 4-star safety rating. It was also given 3 stars for child occupant safety. The Global NACP report shows that it offers great protection for the head and neck and adequate protection for the driver’s and front passenger’s chest. Nexon also provides satisfactory head and chest protection levels for 18-month-olds. The test vehicle provided by the company was equipped with standard dual airbags and ABS. According to Tata Motors, the Tata Nexon derives its impact absorbing strength from its high strength steel body.

Shirtsleeves Hydrail Stations

by guest blogger Stan Thompson

On Sunday, September 16, 2018, at Bremervörde, in the State of Niedersachsen, Germany, I boarded the first intercity hydrail train—my dream since 2003! It was Alstom’s shiny new blue Coradia iLint Hydrogen Multiple Unit light rail train, wireless electric and silent as the wind turbines on the North German horizon which will soon power most of Germany’s formerly-diesel passenger trains.

This week, reflecting on that ride, it struck me that the silence, the zero-emissions and the non-dependence on imported fuel are just the beginning of the hydrail passenger revolution. The most noticeable difference may soon be “shirtsleeve stations.”

Because hydrail trains have neither a sizzling 25,000 volt catenary power supply line dangling a few feet above them nor deadly fine particulate diesel emissions emanating from them, they suggest the possibility of a new form of passenger station that could go a long way toward luring us out of cars and off of roads. The new generation of rolling-stock is, as it were, house-trained.

Inside a station, the breath of a hydrail train is indistinguishable from yours or mine—unless we just ate something that makes us less nice to be near—in which case the train’s pure, oderless moisture is markedly nicer.

Because the new trains are so simple and clean, it should be possible and economical to build stations with automatic doors that pop open as the train approaches, pop down behind it and pop open again to let it go on its way. Air screens might prove a workable alternative to doors. That means the whole passenger loading area could easily be air conditioned in the summer and heated toasty warm in the winter.

In Scandinavia, in Northern Europe and in places like Dubai, that comfort level could make all the difference in the appeal of transit over driving or submitting to the teeth-grinding adventure of early self-aimed cars.

In violently extreme locales like Novosibirsk and the Australian Outback, the prospect of train stations that feel more like airport boarding gates could make rail travel much more attractive.

But I predict that Germany, the United Kingdom and possibly France will pioneer shirtsleeve hydrail stations—not because of need but simply because they can…and have already made the decision to lead the hydrail transition for climate, health, energy independence and economic reasons.

New Maruti Ciaz 2018 launched in India at starting price of Rs 8.19 lakh

The Maruti Ciaz 2018 – much more than a facelift

The new Maruti Ciaz may look like a facelift of the old Maruti Ciaz but there are changes inside too according to latest car news. Maruti has not just given its looks a few minor tweaks but given it a new feel and under the hood, it will boast of a new K15 1.5-liter petrol engine replacing the old 1.4 liters.

The front design has changed to being wider and lower with a slimmer grille and LED daytime running lights. There are big air dams on the front bumpers, and the door handles have a chrome finish.

New engine with more power

The new engine produces 103 bhp at 6,000 rpm, more than enough to keep it moving at 100 km/h on the highway. Maruti claims a mileage of 21.5 km/l on the highway thanks to the development of the new Smart Hybrid technology. The diesel version is powered by the old 1.3 liters, 4 cylinder engine but that is probably going to be upgraded to a new 1.5-liter engine soon.

In car comparison with a length of 4,490 mm, the width of 1,730 mm and longer wheelbase than any other car in its class like Hyundai Verna the new Maruti Ciaz comfortably seats five passengers.

Fresh interiors

The sedan comes with a faux wood trim and new dual-tone interiors. The dash houses a 7” touch-screen entertainment and navigation system offering both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay mobile apps. The rear seats get adjustable headrests. The steering wheel is three spoke with chrome trim.

Great buy with good safety features

As far as safety, it offers the same car technologies as any other comparable C segment sedan with dual airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors and seatbelt reminders for front passengers. Rear camera and cruise control are available on higher-end variants. With Maruti’s trusted dealership and service network and their knowledge of how to maintain/service a car, the new Maruti Ciaz is a sure winner.

Some Automotive Technologies That Are Almost Here

The magical automotive future promised by cartoons seemed farfetched back in the day.  After all, it was fantasy at the time with no existing technology to back it up. Let us examine 4 technologies that are going to change the way we interact with and drive our vehicles within just a few years.

1) Multiview Heads-Up Display

Today, heads-up windshield displays show some pieces of key information to the driver, things like how fast you are going, what gear you’re in.  This reduces your need to take your eyes off the road and look at the instrument panel. The “Super Multiview Head-ups Display” brings this idea into the future. Think about road warnings, turn-by-turn navigation arrows indicating street names or your next turn appearing virtually in the distance. Someday you may even be able to drive safely in heavy fog while using a head-up display that is integrated with adaptive cruise control and in-car cameras. Cool stuff!

2) Car-to-Local Object Communications

Using in-car sensors and transmitters integrated into roadside devices, “Connected Cars” will be able to send and getlocation and speed data to and from each other using communication protocols. The system’s goal is to improve traffic flow, avoid collisions and alert drivers to upcoming traffic situations. A Car-to-Local Object Communication System has actuallygoneisrough tests  at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute in a test of well over two thousand connected cars.

3) Self-driving Cars

You have probably heard of this one already courtesy of Google. This is the car that drives itself, thanks to cameras, a radar, sensors, lasers and plenty of computer science magic. There are many pictures of Google Autonomous cars being tested on the internet. Those of us who enjoy driving may be thinking, “Hold on. Why would I ever hand the wheel to a computer?” One answer comes from how, in theory, autonomous car and truck fleetscould dramatically reduce vehicle accidents and traffic. That’s hard to argue against. The other answer is that autonomous cars could be wonderful for the daily commute. You could literally work while your vehicle drives you to work.

4) Nationwide Quick-Charge Networks

One popular “Why-I-wouldn’t-buy-an-EV” excuse is “How will I take a road trip? I need somewhere to charge along the way!” Enter the automakers to design and build the filling stations of the future. Nissan, maker of the well-liked Leaf EV, has announced that they’re partnering with quick-charge provider CarCharging to add 48 chargers in California and some spots on the East Coast. Many more quick-chargers have been installed in a few states under a pair of federal-private programs operated by Ecotality  andChargePoint. As others jump on board, it is not crazy to expect that before long you’ll be able to drive an EV cross-country.

Today the fantasies discussed above are arriving closer to fruition.  In fact, some are just a few years away! Thank you to the Sales team at Akins, a full-service Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and RAM car dealership in Winder, GA.

What Drivers Should Know About Engine Oil

There are now many brands and types of oil on the market.  Fortunately, there are automotive industry standards which explain all their characteristics so you can find what is best for your vehicle. Read on for some interesting information!

Getting the best oil for your vehicle

Choosing the right engine oil is not easy. For one thing, there are two basic kinds; synthetic and standard. Synthetic engine oils have been available for years and years and are considered mainstream today. As the name suggests, they are derived from chemical compounds other than those in crude oil. More expensive synthetics provide great lubrication at any temperature, contain additives to condition engine seals and may be used for a long time with no change.

So, which oil is best?  The first thing to do is consult your owner’s manual. Some vehicle makers outline specific brands, blends, and viscosities, and most always on their newer models. The designated oils could have specific additives or characteristics that your car’s engine needs for the best economy and performance. If you are ever in doubt, ask a car dealer who has experience with your vehicle model. We would recommend checking with a helpful Service team associate at Beck Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM near Jacksonville FL.

Viscosity ratings

On the front of many oil containers you will see the “viscosity rating.” Viscosity can be thought of as the oil’s “thickness.” Viscosities you might find include 0W-20, 5W-30, 10W-40, and 20W-50, but there are many others. These are multi-grade oils, with additives to tailor their viscosities to various engines’ oil requirements and operating temperatures.

Let’s Reflect

Consider oil’s role in your engine’s well-being. There’s more to engine oil than we’re able to discuss here, but with having looked at the basics, you can start to understand engine oil and make the perfect choice for your car.

We have come a long way from the days when just the auto parts store carried a few big brands of oil, and that was about it. As engines have become more complex, engine oil has diversified to keep up. This can only be a good thing.

Bonus: How to do your own oil change

For many cars, it is ideal to check the oil with your engine cold and off (there are a few exceptions, so look in the owner’s manual), when parked on a level surface. If you are not sure where your engine’s dipstick resides, consult the manual.

All you do is pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a towel or rag. Replace it, then pull it out again. You should see oil between the two holes or lines in the dipstick; when it is in that range, your level is fine. If it’s at or below the stick’s lower mark, add a quart and check your level again soon.

Whether you change your engine oil yourself or have it done at a garage, just be sure you do it. As the oil additives break down and contaminants get into the engine, oil’s effectiveness is compromised!  And we are not making this up; oil really does become less effective over time. And you probably don’t want to see that happen!
