Sports Car Sales In America – May 2019

The GCBC Analysis

Sports Car sales were a bit of a mixed bag for the month of May and so far this year. Muscle Cars and Misc. Sports Car sales were both down while Euro Sports Cars and Premium Sports Cars were both up.

It’s hard to judge the Muscle Car segment without Ford and GM’s sales data. Those companies report quarterly now. The only model represented here is the Dodge Challenger which saw a drop of about 18 percent.

Euro Sports Cars sales were strong for the segment as a whole. The segment was up about 700 sales for the month. The segment was up thanks to sales increases from the Mercedes SLC-Class and the Jaguar F-Type. It was also bolstered by the newcomers to the segment, the BMW 8-Series and the BMW Z4.

The Premium Sports Car segment was up about 200 sales for May. Those sales came from sales gains by the Acura NSX, BMW i8, and the Mercedes-AMG GT. The newcomer to the segment, the BMW 8-Series also contributed to the rise overall.

The Misc. Sports Car segment saw the largest decline. It dropped by 2,600 sales. Every single model in the segment saw sales decreases. Most were in the double digits.

When you look YTD in every section of the Sports Car Segment, you’ll see that those sales numbers mirror the monthly sales numbers.

Important note: Ford, GM, and FCA have switched to quarterly reporting, making it more difficult to accurately gauge sales. We won’t have results to report for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, Lincoln, Jeep, Chrysler, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, and Ram until the end of each quarter.
