Yes, thee was (is still?) an obscure U.S. law that allows embassy staffmembers from foreign countries to bring in non-conforming vehicles for their use while here in the States. Hemmings Sports & Exotic Cars magazine once did a ‘Driveable Dream” story on a 1984 Rover 3500 sedan that was brought to the U.S., at the behest of a member of…the ITALIAN Consulate in Los Angeles? The car stayed there until the staffer was transferred to Phoenix, Arizona, and when the staffer later returned home, the car was left behind and eventually made it to a used car lot, where a British-born engineer at either Nissan or Jaguar saw it and bought it, and the car was later taken to Connecticut when that engineer became the Director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Division!!
