Makati is PH Most Accident-Prone, Manila Most Flood-Prone–Waze

Surprise, surprise. Manila is said to be the most flood-prone area in the country while Makati is said to be the most accident-prone.

This has been the data garnered by community-based road navigation app Waze, in collaboration with Thinking Machines, a data science consultancy.

The data was gathered solely from Waze users’ reports on floods and accident prone areas.

Based on the data gathered, following Makati in the accident-prone areas in the country are (2) Mandaluyong, (3) Pasay, (4) Manila, (5) Pasig.

On sixth to tenth places are Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, Paranaque and Marikina, respectively.

For the flood-prone areas, following Manila are Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasay, and San Juan, respectively.

For the bottom five are Quezon City, Taguig, Las Pinas, Navotas, and Pasig.

It is noticeable in the list that only Navotas in the Camanava (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) part, which usually experiences flooding, is not included in the list of flood-prone areas. We hope that this is the real case from now on.

Sarah Rodriguez, Country Manager for Waze Philippines, explained that the data came from crowdsourced updates.

“The data garnered in collaboration with the Thinking Machines indicates that more can be done to encourage road safety and alleviate congestion, and we hope to continually leverage the cooperation of our 2.85 million active user base in the Philippines to help prevent accidents by providing crowdsourced updates on heavy traffic, floods and road closures in real-time,” she said.

For their part, Stephanie Sy, CEO, Thinking Machines Data Science said that “Waze data offers a wealth of insight about safety and traffic conditions on our roads.”

“We hope this information can be used to design policies and programs that improve transportation for everyone,” she added.

During the rainy season, you may use the Waze app to assist you in navigating heavy traffic while commuting in the Philippines. To report instances of congestion, accidents, flooding, road closures or any other traffic incidents on Waze, download the Waze App on iPhone or Android, launch the app and follow these steps:

  1. Tap ‘Reports’ (orange button on the bottom right of the screen). This will save your location if you choose to submit the report later.

  2. Select the report type from the ‘Report’ menu.

  3. Tap ‘Send’ to share the report.
