Tilt steering column shaft play

Have a 92' W150 that is having major steering issues. Truck was involved in an head on accident and the column is collapsed. Since finding a good tilt column for this truck is like finding the holy grail I decided to try to fix it. I added a 1" rod end to hold the shaft (see pic). It got rid of 99% of the problem but exposed another one. I put a vice grip on the column shaft before the rag joint.
