Fuel lift pump dead, but fuel pressure very high?

I hope someone can explain this. I've had my fuel lift pump fail before so I've installed a fuel pressure gauge. I run a stock type Autozone supplied lift pump mounted on the block in the original place. I drove the truck a couple of hundred miles the other day and it ran fine. I shut it off for ten minutes to grab a coffee. When I returned and started the truck, it started right up, but ran poorly. The engine sputtered and acted like it wasn't getting fuel pressure.
